Common Hawthorn - May - Quickthorn: A very hardy, deciduous, native tree, extensively used for hedging throughout the British Isles. The glossy, deeply lobed dark green leaves appear in spring, turning golden in autumn. Sprays of very fragrant, creamy-white flowers are produced in May, followed by branches laden with dark red fruits or haws, in autumn, which can be used for making jellies or herbal teas. A good plant to use for hedging near horses. Will tolerate dryness or excessive moisture when established. Plant in all types of moist, well drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Hardiness rating H7. If planting for hedging, plant 7 per metre for a double staggered row.
