A large, deciduous maple tree, with an upright conical habit, up to 15m high, with silvery-grey bark. Mid-green, deeply cut 3-5 lobed leaves up to 10cm long, which have a silvery underside, and turn red and yellow in autumn. Clusters of tiny reddish flowers in early spring, but seldom produce seeds. Plant is moist, well drained soil, in full sun or partial shade, but avoid chalk otherwise it seldom produces a good autumn colour. Hardiness rating H6.
