Also known as Chamaerops execelsa - Chusan palm, Chinese windmill palm. A small to medium sized tree with a tall, single trunk, covered with a thick layer of fibrous remains of old leaf bases. Fan shaped leaves, 1-1.5m across, split into up to 40-50 leaflets 80-100cm long are borne on long, stiffly erect petioles in a cluster from the summit of the trunk. Large terminal panicles bear small clusters of yellow flowers in early summer, followed by marble like bluish black fruits. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well drained soil, avoiding clay. Drought resistant. Hardiness rating H5.
