Carpinus betulus

Common hornbeam – A medium to large size deciduous tree which develops a grey, fluted trunk.    also recommended as a good hedge plant.   The leaves are 5-8cm long, ovate, and are a conspicuously ribbed, turning yellow in the autumn.   Catkins are produced in the spring, followed by hop-like fruit clusters.   The dried leaves are retained into the winter giving a similar effect to beech.   Makes an attractive hedge.  Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist well drained soil, and suitable for clay or chalk.   Hardiness rating H7.   If planting for hedging, plant 5 per metre for a single row, or 7 per metre for a double staggered row.

Sold in bundles of 10/25

1+0  Field grown from seed in one season – seedling (or sometimes called a whip), which is generally a single stem plant.   These are suitable for planting where soil is shallow or on exposed windy sites or weed competition is less intense.

1+1  A two year old plant grown from seed in the first year and then transplanted from the seed bed into a different area of the field, and spaced out for the second growing season, which produces a robust plant with a larger, more robust root system that the 1+0 or 1U1 plants, thereby enabling it to more easily withstand drought and weed competition.   A good choice for farm hedging.
