Corylus avellana
Hazel – common filbert - Our native species of hazel, a large, deciduous shrub, or small, multi-stemmed tree, which looks very impressive when draped in yellow male catkins up to 6cm long, in February, followed by edible nuts in autumn. The rounded, mid-green leaves turn yellow in autumn. Useful as a tall screening shrub. Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist, well drained alkaline or neutral soil, avoiding clay. Hardiness rating H6.
Sold in bundles of 10/25 whips.
1+0 Field grown from seed in one season – seedling (or sometimes called a whip), which is generally a single stem plant. These are suitable for planting where soil is shallow or on exposed windy sites or weed competition is less intense.
