Crataegus monogyna
Common Hawthorn – May – Quickthorn: A very hardy, deciduous, native tree, extensively used for hedging throughout the British Isles. The glossy, deeply lobed dark green leaves appear in spring, turning golden in autumn. Sprays of very fragrant, creamy-white flowers are produced in May, followed by branches laden with dark red fruits or haws, in autumn, which can be used for making jellies or herbal teas. A good plant to use for hedging near horses. Will tolerate dryness or excessive moisture when established. Plant in all types of moist, well drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Hardiness rating H7. If planting for hedging, plant 7 per metre for a double staggered row.
Sold in bundles of 10/25 whips.
1+0 Field grown from seed in one season – seedling (or sometimes called a whip), which is generally a single stem plant. These are suitable for planting where soil is shallow or on exposed windy sites or weed competition is less intense.
1+1 A two year old plant grown from seed in the first year and then transplanted from the seed bed into a different area of the field, and spaced out for the second growing season, which produces a robust plant with a larger, more robust root system that the 1+0 or 1U1 plants, thereby enabling it to more easily withstand drought and weed competition. A good choice for farm hedging.
