Rosa canina Dog Rose:  A medium to large sized vigorous, arching deciduous shrub up to around 3m in height, with strong, prickly stems and rich green leaves with 5 – 7 leaflets.   Native of the hedgerow and downs.   Single white or pale pink flowers 5cm across, with prominent yellow stamens, are produced in early summer in small clusters, and are then followed by ovoid red fruits in late summer and early autumn.   Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist well drained acid, alkaline or neutral soil.   Hardiness rating H7. Sold in bundles of 10/25 whips. 1+1  A two year old plant grown from seed in the first year and then transplanted from the seed bed into a different area of the field, and spaced out for the second growing season, which produces a robust plant with a larger, more robust root system that the 1+0 or 1U1 plants, thereby enabling it to more easily withstand drought and weed competition.   A good choice for farm hedging.
