Malus sylvestris Common crab apple: Wild crab:  A small deciduous rounded tree or large shrub, with mid-green broadly elliptic leaves up to 8 cm long.   White flowers, suffused pink up to 5cm across, are produced in late spring, followed by yellowish green, or red-flushed fruits up to 3cm across, in autumn.    Plants in all types of moist, well drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.   Hardiness rating H6.   If planting in a hedge, plant 7 per metre for a double staggered row. Sold in bundles of 10/25 whips. 1+0  Field grown from seed in one season – seedling (or sometimes called a whip), which is generally a single stem plant.   These are suitable for planting where soil is shallow or on exposed windy sites or weed competition is less intense.
