Prunus spinosa
Blackthorn: Sloe: A large, dense, deciduous, familiar hedgerow shrub or small bushy tree, with dark green, ovate leaves, and dark, spiny branches, which become crowded in March or early April with small, white flowers, followed by small, damson like fruits, blue-bloomy at first, later becoming shining black. The fruits are often used in preserves, wine-making or flavouring gin. Plant in all types of moist, well drained soil, in full sun. Hardiness rating H7. If planting in a hedge, plant 7 per metre for a double staggered row.
Sold in bundles of 25 whips.
1+0 Field grown from seed in one season – seedling (or sometimes called a whip), which is generally a single stem plant. These are suitable for planting where soil is shallow or on exposed windy sites or weed competition is less intense.
1+1 A two year old plant grown from seed in the first year and then transplanted from the seed bed into a different area of the field, and spaced out for the second growing season, which produces a robust plant with a larger, more robust root system that the 1+0 or 1U1 plants, thereby enabling it to more easily withstand drought and weed competition. A good choice for farm hedging.
