Star magnolia: A medium-sized, slow growing, deciduous, Japanese shrub, which forms a compact, rounded specimen up to 1.5-2.5m high with a spread of 2.5-4m. Grey-hairy winter buds producing profuse quantities of white, fragrant, many petaled, star shaped flowers, in March and April. Plant in moist, well drained acid, alkaline or neutral soil, avoiding shallow chalk, in full or partial shade. Hardiness rating H6.
