Saucer magnolia - Chinese magnolia: One of the most popular magnolias for general planting. A large shrub up to 5m-6m tall, with several wide spreading branches. Large, tulip-shaped white flowers, stained rose-purple, up to 25cm across, appear during April to early May, before the dark green obovate leaves, up to 20cm long. Plant in moist, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. This plant is only moderately lime-tolerant, but no good for shallow chalk soil. Hardiness rating H6.
