Rhododendron ‘Scarlet Wonder’

A dwarf, compact, evergreen, shrub growing between 0.1 and 0.5m high, with small dark green leaves.   A wonderful profusion of lax trusses appear in April-May, producing funnel-shaped bright deep red, wavy edged flowers.   This is an ericaceous plant and therefore requires an acid soil and will not thrive in alkaline soils with a pH of 7.5 or higher, and being a woodland plant, it requires moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter and partial shade, but will benefit from some sun, but avoid the strong early afternoon sun.   Care is needed when planting as the roots are very fine and good quality ericaceous compost, peat or leaf mould should be added.   Rhododendrons will not thrive if planted too deeply and the roots must be kept moist at all times during dry spells.   This plant is suitable for small gardens, rock gardens and containers.   Hardiness rating H6.
