Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’Black Cherry Plum / Purple-Leaf Plum

Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ is a striking deciduous ornamental tree valued for its rich, dramatic foliage and early spring flowers. Renowned in garden design, it provides bold colour contrast throughout the seasons and works well as a specimen tree, in small gardens, or in mixed borders.

Foliage & Flowers:
• Deep purple to nearly black leaves that emerge in spring and hold their colour through summer, turning shades of red and bronze in autumn.
• In early spring, abundant single pale pink flowers bloom before or as the leaves emerge, creating a vivid contrast with the dark foliage.

Fruit:
• Small, decorative dark red plums may appear in late summer, though fruiting is inconsistent and ornamental value outweighs fruit production.

Size & Form:
• Small to medium-sized tree with a rounded to oval crown.
• Typical mature size ~5–7 m tall and 3–6 m wide (varies by site and pruning).

Cultivation:
• Thrives in full sun — best for deepest leaf colour.
• Prefers well-drained soil but is tolerant of a wide range of soil types.
• Hardy and adaptable; performs well in urban landscapes and garden settings.

At certain times of the year the trees and plants that you buy from us may not look like the images shown on our website, this may be due to deciduous leaves falling, or the plant finishing flowering.  All photographs on our website are of our own grown stock, or in the case of Italian specimens, these are photographs of the plants actually in stock.
